There is nothing soft about taking care of soldiers
IT’S a sensible move by the British Army to promote inclusiveness and the availability of emotional support to servicemen and women in the new Armed Forces recruitment drive (“Army turns to PC brigade to recruit more minorities”, January 11).
It is not, as some have said, a softly-softly approach that has no place in the Army.
Yes, soldiers need to be tough physically and mentally and indeed training is rigorous for all.
However, post-traumatic stress for those who have been in battle is not uncommon and can, if unsupported have tragic consequences.
Making all welcome in the services promotes a cohesive society which respects and values everyone expected to put their lives on the line for country and comrades.
Professional counselling and emotional support shows understanding of the psychological effects of being at war. Surely that can only be a very positive measure.
