BATH and the Scarlets play for one of the most unusual trophies in sport tonight, a 3ft high rag doll which sits on top of one of the post protectors. The winners – Bath are the current holders – keep the doll and dress it in their colours until the clubs next meet.

The doll’s origins are disputed. It was first presented in 1921 either by TR Mills, owner of the Salutation Inn where the Scarlets, then known as Llanelli had their headquarte­rs, or by another licensee, Rosina Rothery, a Bath supporter who ran the Queen’s Head at Box.
