Border security farce as deported burglar returns to rob again

- By Cyril Dixon

AN ALBANIAN criminal deported after a jail sentence for burglary sparked fury yesterday for sneaking back into Britain where he was caught with stolen watches.

MPs claimed the case of Dorian Puka was the latest to show how borders were wide open to foreign criminals.

Puka was deported by the Home Office in November 2016 at the end of his nine- month jail sentence for breaking into properties in west London.

He returned and was arrested on November 16 last year in Surbiton, Surrey, after he was caught with two expensive watches, which he had stolen that morning in nearby Tolworth.

Plain clothes police investigating a surge of burglaries in the area had stopped the 23- year- old in the street. They also found a stolen purse on him.

He was jailed for 3d years yesterday after admitting two counts of burglary at Kingston Crown Court.

He re- entered Britain illegally and will be deported again after serving his term.

David Davies, Tory MP for Monmouth, said: “The good news is he has been caught and sent to jail. The bad news is we don’t have any kind of free movement arrangement with Albania and it is worrying that they can come and go into the UK, apparently without any kind of checks being done. “What we should do is find out how he was able to get into the UK and be more strict in applying the law.” David Green, of think- tank Civitas, said: “This shows there is something wrong with the immigration system if someone who has been deported can come straight back into the country.” Puka was arrested in August 2015, breaking into the home of a man in Twickenham who was away on holiday in France. The victim had set up a surveillance webcam and watched on his computer as Puka and two others broke into his house. He told a neighbour and Puka was caught. He was jailed for nine months at Isleworth Crown Court, west London, in February 2016, after admitting that burglary and a previous one in Ealing. A Home Office spokeswoman said: “In 2016/ 17 we removed more than 6,000 foreign criminals. “It’s harder than ever for those with no right to be here to remain here.”
