Jane laughs off lip plaster after skin cancer op

- By Gillian Crawley

FILM star Jane Fonda made light of surgery to remove a cancerous growth when she appeared on US TV sporting a big plaster on her lower lip.

Double Oscar-winner Jane, 80, insisted there are bigger things to worry about in the world.

Her growth is thought to be a basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

She said: “I just had a cancer taken from my lip.

“I thought it was going to heal in time before I came before you but it’s fine. I just wanted to explain it.

Joking about the plaster on her lip, she added: “I don’t normally go around like this.”

She appeared with her co-star Lily Tomlin, 78, on Monday to promote the Netflix comedy Grace And Frankie.

When praised for making her public appearance, she replied: “Well, the world is falling apart. What’s a lip, right? I’m going to be fine, thanks.”

Ms Fonda made fun of her appearance in a picture with Ms Tomlin on Instagram, where she covered her mouth with her hand, as though she was sharing a secret with her pal.

“I’ve found a clever way to disguise my lip bandages from removal of cancer,” she wrote in the caption. In an another appearance with Tonight chat show host Jimmy Fallon, Ms Fonda playfully scolded Ms Tomlin for staring. “Don’t look at my bandage,” she said.

“Just keep focused.” To which Ms Tomlin replied: “Well that’s impossible, I’m kind of obsessed with looking.”

In 2011, Ms Fonda was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a small tumour removed.

Her cancer was found to be “noninvasive” and she posted on her blog: “I had a scare with a non-invasive breast cancer but it is ALL OUT NOW!!!”

She continued: “I am so lucky. We got it early and it was, as I said, noninvasive. I want to thank my friends and fans who have written beautiful letters. It has meant a lot to me.”

Ms Fonda, who has suffered from bulimia, recently confessed she never thought she would live so long.

“When I was young I never thought I was going to make it past 30,” she claimed. “But I was wrong. I am still here and I feel very alive.

“I’ve smoked pot, drunk more than I should and I had a knee replacement but I am still here, looking to the future.”
