Style up an old favourite
REDUCE, reuse and recycle are the new three Rs but now we can recycle whole kitchens, not just kitchen waste. January is a good time to buy a second-hand kitchen as you can sometimes pick up ex-display furniture when showrooms refresh after Christmas.
The Used Kitchen Company sells these on its website, theusedkitchen company.com, as well as second-hand designer kitchens for up to half price.
“Recycling prevents kitchen components contributing to more than 10 million household items that are putting pressure on UK landfill each year and enables owners to ‘skip the skip’,” says director Looeeze Grossman.
“There is no sense in hiring a skip and sending a kitchen to landfill when we could recycle it and allow its owner to earn some cash by selling it on.”
Trends
But if you just want to update your kitchen Mike Lavers, market manager for kitchens at B&Q, suggests some options: “Simply replacing tiles, handles and giving walls a lick of new paint can help bring trends to life in a more subtle – and affordable – way,” he says
Lavers singles out B&Q’s Touches Of Morocco mosaic tiles as a strong 2018 trend and also expects metallic touches such as copper cupboard handles to be big, as well as back-to-nature FSCapproved wood and organic materials.
Other updates could include new sinks, work surfaces or taps. Caple’s steaming water Vapos tap can supply cold, hot and 98°C water from one stainless steel spout.
If you’re looking to do some kitchen renovation, window and blind company Velux advises working out your budget and paying a profession to do the job. The Used Kitchen Company sells ex-display kitchens like this as well as second-hand designer kitchens (020 8349 1943; theusedkitchen company.com)
