Cardiff set up dream City tie

- Tim Nash

JUNIOR HOILETT ran riot as Cardiff City survived a scare against League Two Mansfield to earn a glamour home tie against Manchester City in the next round.

Danny Rose’s 13th goal of the season gave the Stags hope of an upset when he cancelled out Bruno Ecuele Manga’s opener to leave it all square at the break. But quickfire strikes from Hoilett and Anthony Pilkington after the break put Neil Warnock’s Championship high-flyers in charge before the Canadian completed his brace.

Cardiff wasted a glorious chance to take the lead in the 15th minute when Kenneth Zohore got his feet in a tangle when clean through on goal.

Hoilett then had a curling shot superbly saved by goalkeeper Conrad Logan in the Mansfield goal.

The hosts twice went close themselves but were made to pay for their wastefulness

when Manga hooked home from close range after Sean Morrison headed Joe Ralls’ corner back into the danger area.

But the Bluebirds’ celebrations had barely died down when Mansfield equalised. Rose drove a low shot under keeper Neil Etheridge after Cardiff failed to clear Hayden White’s cross.

It was anyone’s game at the interval but all that changed when two goals in five minutes turned the tie in Cardiff’s favour. First Hoilett stabbed home to put Cardiff ahead on 67 from Callum Paterson’s cross following a corner.

Four minutes later it was 3-1 when Pilkington fired home from Loic Damour’s cross.

Hoilett then capped his fine display with a blistering shot from the edge of the box. HOILETT: Brace
