MEGHAN’S MOBBED AS WILLS SHOWS OFF A VERY BOLD NEW LOOK

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle got a rapturous reception from crowds in Cardiff who waited to see them on their first joint visit to Wales yesterday.

Meghanmania hit the Welsh capital despite heavy rain and the couple being delayed on their train from London.

“Sorry we’re late,” Harry told crowds outside Cardiff Castle while his former actress fiancee, 36, said: “I’m so sorry.”

Meghan in a Stella McCartney coat, a Theory jacket, and trousers by Welsh brand Hiut Denim, charmed her audience. “It’s my first time in Wales,” she said.

Among wellwishers Meghan came across a young girl with a sign saying they shared the same name.

She also met royal fans Anne and Judy Daley, who had a balloon with a Happy Engagement message. They invited her to stage her hen night in Cardiff – and she jokingly accepted, saying: “I’d love to.”

The couple were then introduced to more namesakes Megan Taylor, aged nine, and sixyear-old Harry Smith, who presented them with a Welsh lovespoon, an early wedding gift from the people of Wales.

Meghan, who will marry her Prince on May 19 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, said: “Wow it’s beautiful thank you very much.” Inside the castle there was another wedding present – a cake made for them from Welsh cheese.

“Oh my goodness. How sweet is that?” Meghan exclaimed when she saw the cake created by the Snowdonia Cheese Company based in Rhyl, North Wales. She tried a taste of the cheddar used in the cake and pronounced it “delicious”.

She and Harry left with a hamper of Welsh food and drink after almost an hour and a half inside the castle, meeting groups invited to give them a flavour of Welsh culture, heritage and life.

In the castle’s main building they were treated to performances of Welsh song, poetry and dance. And Emily Pemberton, head girl at Plasmawr Secondary School in Cardiff, read them a poem in Welsh, Hon – which means This One – by Sir Thomas Parry-Williams. “It’s official: I definitely can’t speak Welsh,” Harry said afterwards.

The couple also listened to a breathtaking love song performed in Welsh by Enlli Pugh, an awardwinning singer from the Eryri Young Farmers Club. “Oh that’s wonderful,” Meghan said. “Thank you.”

Harry had explained to her that the Welsh had a reputation for being tuneful. “You’re only going to get the best singing in Wales. At the Principality Stadium people are in tune, which you can’t say for most football stadiums,” he told her.

They were also entertained by dance troupe the Jukebox Collective with a performance for their visit called Toy Soldier. It featured dancer Kate Morris, 18, teasing a Guardsman, played by Reuel Elijah, 21, who was eventually persuaded to join in and dance.

“You’ll never make a Guardsman,” Harry quipped. “If the Guardsman started dancing like that what will the tourists think?”

THE crowds went wild about Meghan and so do the rest of us. Prince Harry’s fiancée positively sparkled as she accompanied her beau on a visit to Cardiff. What a positive sign for the future it is.
