Catch up on healthy Omega-3

- By George Nichols

Krill oil is now recognised as a far superior option to the traditional cod liver oil

IT’S the little things that matter. Scientists believe that the oceans are home to up to 80 per cent of all species on the planet. And what do they put that down to? Krill, the tiny shrimp-like creatures that are a staple in the marine food chain, sustaining so many species, from fish to penguins to whales. The extraordinary thing is that they can sustain you too...

Krill oil is now recognised as a far superior option to the traditional cod liver oil as a healthy diet supplement. The latter has long been taken as it contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (known to boost the brain, protect the heart and support vision) which cannot be produced by the body.

The big bonus with krill oil is that unlike fish oil, it naturally combines the omega-3 with phospholipids, a major component of all cell membranes. The body recognises phospholipids as part of its own cell membrane and readily incorporates the whole complex, meaning that more beneficial ingredients are absorbed.

Krill oil also contains choline, a vital neurotransmitter that is also important for healthy liver function.

The most concentrated krill oil supplement on the market comes from the Cambridge scientists of leading nutrition supplement creator FutureYou. It has received much attention from organisations involved in both health and performance, including the US military.

Sustainably sourced from the pristine waters of the Antarctic, it goes through a purification process that removes salts, leaving a higher concentration of vital omega-3 and phospholipids.

The process also removes the strong fishy flavour, making FutureYou Krill Oil (which comes in soft, easy-to-swallow capsules) the perfect alternative for those who struggle to take cod liver oil.

The FutureYou team put its concentrated Krill Oil to the test. Five people – all of whom considered themselves to be ‘foodies’ with a balanced diet – took a blood test to discover their own omega-3 levels and all found that it was significantly lower than recommended.

After eight weeks of taking FutureYou Krill Oil, the participants had all seen improvements, in one case with a boost of 52 per cent in omega-3 levels. Over time, these results represent a significant boost to the proper functioning of the heart and liver.

The US military, as well as sports scientists conducting research on professional athletes, are expected to present findings on the benefits of krill oil for mental and physical performance in 2018.

Every little helps – and krill can certainly help our health.
