Lyon-tamer’s 34 in an over
DAVID WILLEY yesterday came close to inflicting the ultimate humiliation on Ashes-winner Nathan Lyon, smashing five sixes and a four in one over as England coasted to a T20 warm-up victory.
The Yorkshire all-rounder starred with bat and ball as England dominated a Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, winning by eight wickets with seven overs to spare, as they continue preparations for the Tri-Series against Australia and New Zealand.
Willey nearly joined an exclusive club of just 10 men who have hit six maximums in an over in international, first class or domestic competition, having to settle for a sweetly struck four through the covers off the final delivery.
“I probably was disappointed, especially in an England shirt. I can barely get it off the square usually,” said Willey.
“It would have been nicer to get the final one too but if you’re hitting 34 off an over you can’t complain.”
Willey had the opportunity to open after injuries ruled out Alex Hales (hand) and Jason Roy (back).
He said: “I got a chance at the top of the order and I had nothing to lose.
“I went out with a bit of a free rein.” JAY AJAYI could not take watching New England Patriots’ amazing comeback to win the Super Bowl last year. He vowed never to return to America’s showpiece unless his team were playing in it.
Now the Londonborn Philadelphia Eagles running back has his wish as he bids to prevent the Patriots winning it for a sixth time in Minneapolis tomorrow.
“I’m just glad it’s all worked out,” said Ajayi. “This is a dream come true.”
