Robins still off song as Ameobi strikes

- By Ian Whittell

SAMMY AMEOBI’S dramatic counter-attack goal ensured Bristol City’s struggles since that famous victory over Manchester United continued.

Lee Johnson’s Robins have now won just twice in eight league outings since that cup upset.

Midfielder Derik broke up a City attack on the edge of the Bolton area and found Ameobi on the halfway line.

The striker advanced to 25 yards from goal and planted a magnificent finish into the bottom corner.

The loss of leading scorer Gary Madine, sold for £6million to Cardiff on deadline day, was supposed to be problematic for Bolton.

And it looked as if that might be the case in a first half in which the only moment of real concern for City keeper Luke Steele came when he collided with a team-mate trying to catch a corner.

The ball broke for Dorian Dervite, whose shot was blocked before Karl Henry steered a shot just wide.

City’s fluent style began to carve out chances and Famara Diedhiou came within inches of connecting with a Bobby Reid cross.

The busy Reid also missed his team’s best opening of the first half after 37 minutes.

David Wheater blocked efforts from Aden Flint and Josh Brownhill in quick succession and the ball broke for Reid who steered a low shot wide.

City maintained their threat soon after the restart and Flint could have done better from a corner. Then Diedhiou, after superb work and a cross from Korey Smith, might have broken the deadlock.

It took Ameobi to do that and Zach Clough was close to a second.
