I’m going to be the daddy

- Michael Johns

CHRIS EUBANK JNR believes he will become the world’s top supermiddleweight if gets the better of George Groves on Saturday – and step out of his father’s shadow.

A place in the World Boxing Super Series final is at stake at the Manchester Arena and Eubank accepts this could be the fight that proves he is as good as his famous father was.

“This is a defining fight for me,” said Eubank. “This is the fight that can propel me to the top of the sport.

“It gives me the right to say I’m legitimately the best supermiddleweight in the world.

“Two world titles, that’s every fighter’s dream. And it’s just the beginning – it’s collection season, I’m coming for all the belts. After this tournament all the other guys who hold belts are all on the hit list.

“George Groves is just first one to bite the dust.”

Eubank, who has won his last eight fights since losing for the only time as a professional on points to Billy Joe Saunders in November 2014, claimed: “I don’t think George is fully committed to this fight and I don’t think he’s willing to give everything to win.”

Groves won a world title at the fourth attempt by stopping the Russian Fedor Chudinov last May, having fallen short in previous attempts against Carl the Froch (twice) and Badou Jack. He took all the wind out of Jamie Cox’s sails with a body shot in his first defence in October.

Groves rubbished Eubank’s claim that his appetite was in question.

“This is not my biggest fight to date but I’m in the form of my life – certainly in the best shape of my career – and fully prepared to go out and retain my world title in style,” said Groves.

“I’m world champion and I want to continue to be. I’ve sacrificed a lot, I’ve been through some terrible times to get to where I am now.

“Desire is one thing I know I’ve always had in abundance. I’ve been able to pick myself up from the lowest of points to get back to the top.”
