Paula record tore her colon

- ANDREW ELLIOTT

PAULA RADCLIFFE has revealed she tore the lining of her colon during one of the greatest performances of her career when she broke the marathon world record in Chicago in October 2002.

Radcliffe won in 2hrs 17mins 18secs but passed blood after the race and said: “I, basically – and it’s pretty gross – had taken off the lining of the last part of my colon.

“Because of the bouncing up and down, and the running, the running hard, the blood supply isn’t going as much to there.

“The minute you stop, the blood supply does come back. So that didn’t feel very nice.” Six months later in London, she took the world record to 2:15.25, a time that still stands.

And speaking on the podcast, ‘At Home with Colin Murray’ on BBC Five Live, Radcliffe talked of her high pain threshold during races.

She said: “You have to have a certain drive and you have to enjoy that drive. You don’t feel it as pain, you feel it as more of a challenge than actual pain – you block it out.”

This weekend at Arena Birmingham, Britain’s athletes will be looking to secure their place at next month’s IAAF World Indoor Championships at the same venue. GERAINT THOMAS extended his overall lead at the Volta ao Algarve by winning the individual time trial.

The Team Sky rider triumphed in the 20km third stage in Lagoa and now has a gap of 22 seconds to team-mate Michal Kwiatkowski in the general classification.

“It all seemed to click today,” said Thomas. “We’ll try to keep the leader’s jersey but there are a lot of strong climbers here, so we can’t take anything for granted.” 2.
