Golden couple go out in glory

- From James Toney

CANADA’S Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir produced two brilliant displays to become only the second couple after Russians Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov to win two Olympic ice dance golds.

Then Moir, who along with his partner now has a record five Olympic figure skating medals, admitted they may call it a day.

“Maybe it’s time for us to move on but we’ll wait for the dust to settle before announcing anything,” said Moir.

“I’ve shaved 10 years off my life with the anxiety of competing against these guys.”

After taking gold in Vancouver, the pair took silver in Sochi, with mutterings about grubby back-room deals between the USA and Russia to carve up the podium places. They had unfinished business and leave Korea with double gold after helping Canada win the team event. “Tessa’s put up with me for 20 years and that’s fantastic,” said Moir, who started skating with his partner at the age of eight. “We’ve been fortunate to share this. We’ve relied on each other for much of our lives, we moved away together at a young age to chase this crazy dream and it paid off.”

Britain are bossing it when it comes to sliding down an icy chute at these Games – and now the women’s bobsleigh team are getting in on the act.

Mica McNeill and Mica Moore had to crowdfund to get to South Korea after their funding was withdrawn at short notice.

But the peoplepowered sled – which reached its £30,000 target within a week – is delivering, with the girls sixth and just 0.16 seconds off the podium at the halfway point.

That follows on from three British skeleton medals won on the same track, including gold for Lizzy Yarnold.
