Brownlees set to feel the heat

- IAN GORDON ROSS HEPPENSTALL

ALISTAIR Brownlee insists there will be no brotherly love shown to Jonny when they both bid for Commonwealth Games glory in April.

In a famous act of sporting sacrifice, the two-time Olympic triathlon champion, right, stopped to help his dazed younger brother on the running leg of a 2016 event in Cozumel.

Brownlee carried Jonny the final few hundred metres under a broiling Mexican sun before pushing him across the line, where his sibling promptly collapsed and was taken to hospital.

The duo will soon swap the British winter for the heat of Gold Coast in Australia, where Brownlee snr will defend the Games crown he won in 2014. And Alistair, 29, warned: “If he does it again it’s his own fault. I have done my bit for him, but I don’t think there will be a problem this time. We’ll both be prepared for it after training out there.” Brownlee jnr revealed he has converted a room into a heat chamber to prevent a repeat. “It’s basically my conservatory,” said Jonny. “I’ve put four heaters and a boiling kettle in there to make it more humid, so it can get up to about 32 degrees and I exercise on a stationary bike.” NEIL JUKES has resigned as head coach of Leigh Centurions after they lost three of their opening four games in the Championship.

Owner Derek Beaumont has placed Kieron Purtill in caretaker charge.

Beaumont said he would be “eternally grateful” to Jukes for guiding Leigh to the Super League in 2016. They were relegated after just one season. THE US Open’s next day 18-hole play-off will be scrapped in favour of a two-hole aggregate, the USGA said yesterday after calls to move the tournament more in line with the other three Majors.

The change, which also affects the US Women’s Open, US Senior Open and US Senior Women’s Open, takes effect in the event of a tie after 72 holes. If there is still a tie after the two-hole play-off, the extraholes session will become sudden death.
