Prince Charles scotches gig rumours with Spice Girl Mel

- By Richard Palmer Royal Correspondent

PRINCE Charles yesterday shot down rumours the Spice Girls will perform at the royal wedding – after asking band member Mel C: “Are you still singing?”

The heir to the throne is hosting the private evening reception for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and their close family and friends.

But he appeared unaware of the band’s plans to re-form as he met Melanie Chisholm at the Prince’s Trust Awards at the London Palladium.

Rumours have been rife that the Spice Girls will play their comeback gig at the wedding on May 19.

Band member Mel B even implied that the group had been invited to the ceremony on US television last week.

But Mel C, also known as Sporty Spice, yesterday insisted her bandmate must have been joking.

The 44-year-old singer, a longtime ambassador for the Trust, was asked if she had been invited and replied: “I haven’t got mine yet. I think it must be the snow. I think she was joking.”

Mel C was one of a galaxy of stars at the awards ceremony who lined up to meet the Prince, whose trust they serve as ambassadors. The line-up included Ant and Dec, who hosted the ceremony, pop star Cheryl Tweedy, singing legend Sir Tom Jones, actress Olivia Colman, film star Tom Hardy and Coronation Street actress Helen Worth.

TV presenters Phillip Schofield, Kate Garraway, Caroline Flack, The Voice judge Olly Murs and the show’s 2017 winner Mo Adeniran, were also introduced.

Set up by Charles in 1976, the Prince’s Trust aims to give disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence to find a job.

The charity has helped 870,000 young people since 1976 and supports more than 100 more each day.
