Taser battle star is jailed

- Ross Heppenstall

SUPER League player Scott Moore has been jailed for 23 months after attacking three police officers following a high-speed car chase and being tasered six times.

The 30-year-old hooker became the competition’s youngestever player when he made his debut for St Helens at the age of 16 but at Bolton Crown Court yesterday he was convicted of dangerous driving and assaulting three officers.

Moore, who also played for Castleford, Huddersfield, Widnes, Wakefield and Bradford, was caught driving at 100mph before accelerating up to speeds of 150mph to try to escape police in Greater Manchester on October 14, 2016.

He crashed in a housing estate and, as police attempted to detain him, Moore elbowed an officer and ran away.

Officers eventually caught up with him before engaging in a 50-minute battle in which Moore fought with them while being tasered six times.

During a vicious tug-of-war which left one officer with a serious arm injury, Moore grabbed the taser and turned it on officers saying, “you’re getting it now”.

Moore – who has been without a club since he left Bradford at the end of last season – finally dropped the weapon and was arrested.

He was also banned from driving for two years and Det Con Lynsey Watson-Perry of GMP’s Wigan Borough said: “In all their careers, the officers at the scene had never been so scared nor witnessed such a violent individual that had so much strength to fight.

“Moore knew exactly what he was doing, using his size and experience on the rugby field to evade officers in a desperate struggle that threatened both the safety of officers and innocent members of the public.

“Whatever level of force he is used to displaying on the pitch, this was not a game – people’s lives were in danger and an officer had to undergo surgery.”
