Tragic Astori’s 13 shirt retired

-

CARLOS CARVALHAL has an inscription in his jacket which reads ‘Manager Carlos Carvalhal had a dream’ – now he says that is to keep Swansea in the top flight.

“It is from a song the Sheffield Wednesday fans sang about me but I didn’t ask for it,” said Carvalhal, right. “I’m not a narcissist. I buy my clothes from a shop back in Braga. The guy there did it.” FIORENTINA and Cagliari have both retired their No13 shirt to honour the memory of Davide Astori.

The 31-year-old was found dead in his hotel room in Udine early on Sunday, hours before Fiorentina were due to face Udinese.

All seven of Sunday’s Serie A games were postponed and tributes from across the footballing world poured in for the defender, who won 14 caps for Italy.

And yesterday Fiorentina and Cagliari, Astori’s club between 2008 and 2016, announced they would retire the No13 shirt in his honour.

Cagliari tweeted: “To honour and make indelible the memory of Davide Astori, Fiorentina and Cagliari have decided to jointly withdraw the jersey with the No 13.”

An autopsy yesterday reportedly showed he probably died from a cardiac arrest linked to a slowing heart rate. On Monday, prosecutors opened a routine investigation into his death.

Astori’s funeral will be held in Florence tomorrow.

TOMMY CHARLTON, 71, younger brother of England’s World Cup winners Sir Bobby and Jack, has been invited for trials for the over-60s national walking football team.
