Head to The Lygon Arms in the picturesque village of Broadway in the Cotswolds and you’ll be in good company – past guests have included Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Dating back to the 16th century, the hotel has recently undergone a multimillion pound refurbishment.
The olde-world charm remains intact with antique furniture, roaring fires and wooden beams but there are two new restaurants and a spa with indoor swimming pool, saunas, spa bath and state-of-the-art gym.

Whether you’re short on time or want to indulge in some much-needed pampering, there is a full range of massages and facials on offer using products from British skincare brand Oskia.
Pedicures and manicures are also available from the nail bar.
TREATMENTS TESTED Revitalising facial, £85, 60 minutes
I opted for a nourishing facial that promised immediate results for my dehydrated skin. My therapist started by cleansing before applying an exfoliating balm.
She then used a soothing oil and massaged it in using a technique designed to lift, firm and rejuvenate my facial muscles. Finally an anti-ageing eye treatment was applied to reduce puffiness.
My skin looked brighter, fresher and, dare I say it, a little more youthful.
Personalised massage, £85, 60 minutes
This bespoke full-body treatment can be adapted depending on your needs. My husband opted for a relaxing massage using lavender oil. The therapist concentrated on his upper body, applying firm pressure to his back before working on his tense shoulders, neck and scalp.
Afterwards he felt so relaxed he needed to go for a lie down!
GOOD POINTS
The steaks in The Lygon Bar and Grill were cooked to perfection.
The staff were really attentive and friendly without being overbearing. As the parking in the village can be difficult, the hotel’s valet parking is a real plus point.
WHAT IT COSTS
Prices start at £180 a night for a cosy double and go up to £425 a night for a master suite.
A Lygon Luxury Spa Day, which includes an Oskia signature glow facial, personalised massage and light lunch, starts at £195 per person.
