Gatland has exit plan for North

- Alex Bywater

GEORGE NORTH has been offered the option of an early return to Wales after he was singled out for strong criticism from Northampton.

North – who has signed a National Dual Contract to come back over the Severn Bridge at the end of this season – was slammed by Saints technical coaching consultant Alan Gaffney after he missed the defeat by Sale.

Gaffney suggested North was unwilling to play, saying: “We picked a side who wanted to play for Northampton.”

After making 10 changes to his Wales side and naming North to start in Sunday’s clash with Italy, coach Warren Gatland revealed the player returned to Northampton last week with a minor hip flexor injury.

Gatland said: “The message I have given to George is if he wants to come home quicker than next season, we will look after him.

“We are here for him. He knows if he isn’t comfortable in that environment, we will support him 100 per cent for whatever happens with him. He is just focused on getting on the field and starting on Sunday and then looking to go back to his club.”

The first priority for North, though, is the match against the Azzurri in Cardiff. He starts on the wing, with Bath No 8 Taulupe Faletau captaining the side. James Davies wins his first cap on the flank.

“We’ve been pleased with the impact George has made coming off the bench and he gets a chance to start now,” said Gatland. “He is aware there’s some real competition. Hopefully he’ll make a real impact.”
