- By Paul Jeeves

A GIRL of 11 was killed when a wheel flew off a Land Rover and struck her as she walked to school.

Amelia Wood was strolling along the pavement to a bus stop when the front wheel of the passing 4x4 broke off and hit her on Tuesday morning.

An air ambulance rushed to the scene in Manby, near Louth, Lincolnshire, after horrified passers-by dialled 999.

Amelia was airlifted to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where medics fought in vain to save her life.

Martin Brown, executive principal of her school, Louth Academy, paid tribute to the keen netballer.

He said: “Amelia was a well-loved student who will be greatly missed.

“She was very popular and always helped and supported her friends.

“Amelia will be remembered as a vibrant, passionate and very determined student.”

Simon Clark, head of her old school, Grimoldby primary, said: “She was a wonderful young lady and a well-loved member of our school.

“Her peers voted her on to the school council when she was in Year 6.

“She used this opportunity to support younger pupils and help improve the school any way she could.”

The driver of the Land Rover Discovery, who had only bought the vehicle a month earlier, was said to have been “devastated” by the tragedy.

An air ambulance spokesman said: “Our crew arrived on scene in just 11 minutes - a journey that by land would have taken nearly an hour.”
