Stanley hoping to milk success for all its worth

-

the famous “Accrington Stanley? Who are they?” milk advert hit television screens in the Eighties. Stanley have never won promotion in the EFL. They spent two seasons in the old Third Division (now League One) when the Third and Fourth Divisions were created out of the old regional structure in 1958. Now, though, they sit just a point behind League Two leaders Luton and have a six-point buffer on the sides outside the automatic promotion places. They almost made it two seasons ago, but Coleman’s side hit the woodwork three times in their final game against Stevenage, dropped into fourth place and lost in the play-offs. “We’ve got five players who were in that team who are a big part of our side now. “With the demise of the longstanding club in 1962 and then all the years in the non-League pyramid, getting back in the Football League was looked on as the holy grail for Accrington Stanley.

“And when we did, I think a lot of apathy set in, within the fans and the town. The support wasn’t really there. Now they are realising that we can be successful. Why can’t we?

If you want our players, you’ll pay the going rate

Why can’t we get promoted? Why can’t we play against big clubs? “You have to set your targets high. We sat all our players down at the start of the season – the non-playing staff as well – and told them we all had to push together if we wanted to get promoted.” If the stars align, Stanley could even be playing league games against Sunderland next season. Who are they? Exactly. SKY BET the proud sponsors the EFL. are title of
