Auschwitz guard dies before jail
THE “Bookkeeper of Auschwitz” who was convicted for crimes in the Second World War has died before spending a day in prison.
Oskar Groening was sentenced to four years in 2015 as an accessory to the murder of 300,000 of the concentration camp’s million victims.
Groening died in hospital on Friday aged 96. He did not take part in any killings but counted money taken from victims on their arrival at the camp.
His court battle was one of the last major Holocaust trials. His sentence was delayed by legal wrangling and his ill health.
In 2005 he talked about his work in the camp to persuade Holocaust deniers that the genocide happened.
