Don’t fire pundit, pleads dad who filmed Carragher spit

- By Jan Disley

THE parents of the 14-year-old girl spat at by Jamie Carragher have urged Sky Sports not to sack the football pundit.

Andy and Sarah Hughes said the former Liverpool and England star had contacted them to apologise.

Carragher, 40, is fighting to keep his £1million-a-year job as a match summariser after the controversial incident on Saturday.

The drama unfolded after Mr Hughes, from Colwyn Bay, north Wales, spotted him in traffic after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Mr Hughes filmed him on his mobile phone as he teased him about the result through his car window.

Father-of-two Carragher is seen on the film launching a mouthful of spit, which struck Mr Hughes’s teenage daughter as she sat in the car. But Mr and Mrs Hughes have pleaded with Sky Sports not to sack the former defender over the altercation.

Mr Hughes said: “We don’t want him to lose his job. It is not about that. We wanted an apology and explanation. He seems contrite. Everyone makes mistakes, we are all human.”

Mrs Hughes, 38, added: “He did seem extremely sorry.”

Carragher, from Bootle, Merseyside, is reportedly worth £15million. He has since described the incident as a “moment of madness”.

Manchester United fan Mr Hughes has been spoken to by police over the matter.

Using a phone at the wheel is illegal and drivers can be given a £200 fine and six penalty points.

A police spokeswoman said: “Inquiries are ongoing.”
