Mawson’s still up for this cup

Trophy will not change my Spurs

- Jon West

have needed replays to get past Wolves, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday to reach this stage.

Tottenham, who have overcome scares against Newport and Rochdale to make it this far, are the team standing between Carvalhal’s men and a trip to Wembley for a semi-final clash.

Harry Kane scored in both those ties to book passage into the quarter-finals but he is out after damaging ankle ligaments. “We have to have a go because we may not get another opportunity like this again for five or six years,” Mawson said. “Tottenham are coming to our stomping ground where we’ve beaten Arsenal and Liverpool and we’ve got a number of good results, so we need to realise we’ve definitely got the ability to beat this team. “I would never wish an injury on any footballer, but we have to look at this as a blessing in disguise for us because Kane always tends to pop up and score one or two. “It would be funny if we could seal survival and get to Wembley, but I don’t want to do a Wigan and win the FA Cup and then get relegated. I’d rather stay in the Premier League. Survival is much higher on the agenda but if we can get through tomorrow, then fantastic.” MAURICIO POCHETTINO says winning the FA Cup will prove nothing about Spurs, because cup victories never do. Tottenham have not lifted a trophy since 2008 and Pochettino has yet to win anything as manager but said even if they do triumph this time, it would have no effect on chances of future success in the league or in Europe. Pochettino, left, won the Copa Del Rey as a player with Espanyol in 2000 and 2006 but said they had been lucky and it never improved their league form. . He said: “I’m in the history of Espanyol because we won but I don’t feel it made a massive change. I don’t mean the team that wins the cup doesn’t deserve to win it but sometimes you win because the draw is kind to you. “With the Premier League or La Liga, the Bundesliga or Serie A, you need to deserve to win the title. But with the short competitions it’s completely different.”
