Jailed...thug who mugged girl, 12, for mobile phone

- By Michael Knowles

A MUGGER who dragged a brave 12-year-old girl along a pavement as he stole her mobile phone was yesterday jailed for three years.

Patrik Gunar was arrested after police released CCTV footage of the schoolgirl trying to fend off her attacker, before he fled with her iPhone.

The 22-year-old Slovakian wept as the judge blasted his “preposterous” excuses for the offence which has left his victim afraid to go outside.

The girl fought bravely against Gunar’s “sustained” attack in Cambridge Street, Derby, on February 18.

Gunar, of Derby, later told police officers “she was just a little girl” and “easy prey”.

At Derby Crown Court yesterday he was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to robbery.

Prosecutor Mark Watson said: “He turns quickly, decidedly walks to her and goes straight for her pocket in which her iPhone 6 was.

“To her enormous credit, she tried to hold on to it. As a result she is dragged about, firstly on her feet and then on the floor.

“Even when they fall to the ground he continues to forcibly pull at the phone in her pocket and this lasts about 30 seconds.”

In a statement, which Mr Watson summarised, the girl told how she is now too afraid to go outside for even a few minutes “in case they were going to get her again”.

Sentencing Gunar, Judge Nirmal Shant QC told him: “What you did was walk past a 12-year-old complainant, decided she was easy prey and chose her deliberately because of her age and vulnerability.

“You made up a preposterous story, saying that you had been effectively held at gunpoint or injected with drugs to perform this robbery.”

Daniel Church, defending, said: “He has shown some evidence of remorse in this case. I accept from the outset that this act is utterly despicable.”
