It’s back to the future for Josh

- Ross Heppenstall

JOSH CHARNLEY has returned to Super League with Warrington Wolves after scoring just four tries during his time in rugby union.

The 26-year-old winger left Wigan to make a big-money cross-code switch to Sale Sharks in October 2016.

Charnley scored 165 tries in 176 games during his time at the Warriors but he managed only four in 32 appearances for Sale.

Warrington have handed him a deal until the end of 2020 and Charnley said: “There wasn’t much persuasion needed. I know a few boys here who speak highly of this club so it wasn’t a tough decision to put pen to paper.

“Hopefully I’ll fit straight in with the boys. I’ve been out of the game 17 months.

“I’ll be looking to bring some enthusiasm to the boys and bring a bit of pace to the team.

“I’ll try and be a bit physical and try and give the lads a lift.”

Charnley failed to command a regular spot at Sale and director of rugby Steve Diamond admitted: “We have a highly competitive squad here. Josh’s desire was to play every week and we couldn’t guarantee him that.

“Given how important his desire to play every week was to Josh and to the club, we thought that this opportunity was right for both parties.”

ST HELENS and England prop Alex Walmsley has been ruled out for several months with a neck injury.

The 27-year-old fractured a bone in his neck during Saints’ recent win over Warrington and head coach Justin Holbrook said: “Alex has had an operation to correct the damage and will now begin his recovery led by our medical team. We all wish him well.

“The surgeon has told both Alex and the club that he will make a full recovery and his neck will be stronger than ever.”
