PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Animals: The Yorkshire Vet Casebook, 7pm, Channel 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the last series of The Yorkshire Vet in the autumn but the news that Julian Norton (left) will be leaving the show came as a bombshell to fans at the end of last year. Thankfully the programme will go on after his departure but we also have this series to enjoy too. The Casebook contains favourite stories and unseen footage from the series, following Norton, his partner Peter Wright and the rest of their superb team.

Animals: Big Cats About The House, 8pm, BBC2

The man petting the cheetah in the picture above is Giles Clark (above) and those who watched the series Tigers About The House will be familiar with his work. This is the start of a three-parter which follows the work of Clark on a mission to transform the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent into a centre of global excellence for conservation. In the opening episode, he provides around-the-clock care to Maya, a black jaguar cub.

Documentary: Martin Luther King By Trevor McDonald, 9pm, ITV

The 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King will be marked at the beginning of next month and in advance of that, Sir Trevor McDonald brings us a look at the life of the great civil rights leader. The legendary broadcaster travels to America’s Deep South in the hope of getting closer to the man who meant so much to him and millions of others. He uncovers new sides to the story, speaks to a former member of the Ku Klux Klan and interviews an expert on the horrors of lynching in 20th-century America. He also asks some of the highest-profile black role models, including Naomi Campbell, retired general Colin Powell (left) and Rev Al Sharpton, what King means to them.

Comedy: Not Going Out, 8.30pm, BBC1

At some stage you would think it inevitable that Not Going Out will run out of steam. That day, though, does not appear on the horizon as series nine motors along at pace tonight. A missing toy keyring leads to a rift between Lee and Lucy and their best friends and former neighbours Toby and Anna. Domestic comedy, starring Sally Bretton and Lee Mack (both above) in the lead roles.

Soap: EastEnders, 7.30pm & 9pm, BBC1

The first visit of the night to Albert Square is a routine one. Stacey grills Jean about what she has just said but Mo quickly jumps in to cut her off. The fundraiser at the Vic turns raucous as the residents celebrate the life of Kat. When we return an hour later, though, it all kicks off! Kat returns, surprising a pub full of friends, relatives and former neighbours who have gathered to raise money for her funeral. Gillian Taylforth (right) stars.
