Jamie just frightens defenders

- Tony Banks

HARRY MAGUIRE believes Jamie Vardy is getting better with age and rates him an absolute “nightmare” to play against.

Leicester striker Vardy is set to lead the England attack in Amsterdam tomorrow in their World Cup warm-up with Holland in the absence of Harry Kane.

Kane is battling to recover from an ankle injury in time for the finals, but Maguire feels his Leicester team-mate Vardy, 31, is equally feared by defenders.

Maguire played against Vardy for Hull and endured a difficult time as the Tigers were relegated in 2016-17 but, now they are at the same club and in training, he finds him just as difficult to handle.

Maguire, who will be looking for his fourth cap against the Dutch, said: “Obviously it’s a big loss with Harry out. There is no doubt he is one of our best players. When he went down, I’m sure every England fan, every member of the England staff, every player wanted him to get back up. Hopefully it is good news and it is a speedy recovery.

“But Jamie has scored seven goals in nine games. He’ll be coming here full of confidence.

“In training, it is a nightmare to play against him. When I played against him for Hull at the King Power Stadium, he caused us all kinds of problems. We worked on it tirelessly in training, but they beat us 3-1 and deserved to win.

“His pace is so quick, it frightens you and he is an excellent finisher. He causes trouble for everyone on the back line, he works tirelessly. I’m pleased he’s on my team.”
