It stinks of selling tickets...Rod blasts Elton over his tour
Jocular...Sir Rod on the US chat show retire, I won’t make an announcement. I’ll just fade away.
“I don’t think this big deal, ‘I’m going to retire’ – it stinks of selling tickets.”
Singer Cyndi Lauper, who is touring with Sir Rod this summer and also appeared on the show, joked that it “wasn’t a bad idea”.
She said: “We could say, ‘For the last time, we’re retiring’. Then one more time, ‘Well, maybe the second to last time’.”
But Sir Rod said: “It’s dishonest. It’s not rock and roll.”
Cohen pointed out that Cher had performed several farewell tours.
Lauper replied that once you retire life becomes boring.
However, Sir Rod had kinder words to say about Sir Elton storming off at a concert in Las Vegas, when a fan he invited on stage put his hands on the piano and refused to take them off.
“I don’t mind it. I love people coming up on stage. It’s a laugh,” said Sir Rod. “But I can see why he was ****** off with it. I’ve had people come on stage while I was singing and I’ve nearly had me teeth knocked out.”
Sir Rod and Sir Elton have enjoyed a good-natured but competitive rivalry over the years.
They have performed together many times and in the past have texted each other to compare album sales. During conversations the pair pretend to be a married couple – Sir Rod calls himself Phyllis while Sir Elton is Sharon.
