Tube bomber jailed for 34 years

- By John Twomey

THE true identity of the Parsons Green Tube bomber was in doubt last night as he began a 34-year minimum life sentence.

Mr Justice Haddon-Cave condemned Ahmed Hassan for an Islamic State-inspired plot to cause carnage on a rush-hour train.

He said: “Your intention was to kill as many members of the British public as possible.”

The 18-year-old asylum seeker wounded 51 passengers when his homemade “bucket” bomb went off in a crowded carriage.

Several suffered serious burns but the device only partially exploded and no one died in the west London blast last September.

Hassan, of Sunbury, south-west London, sneaked into Britain in 2015, claiming to be a 16-year-old Iraqi fleeing IS terrorists.

Mr Justice Haddon-Cave told the Old Bailey he was convinced Hassan was much older. He said: “I am satisfied you lied about your date of birth on arrival to glean the special privileges accorded to children entering the UK.”

The judge added: “You will have plenty of time to study the Koran in prison. You should understand that the Koran is a book of peace. Islam forbids breaking the law of the land where one is living or is a guest.”

Hassan, convicted of attempted murder, may also have lied about his name. A source said: “We can’t be 100 per cent we know who he is.”
