Clement’s vow

- Gideon Brooks

PAUL CLEMENT says he has unfinished business in the Premier League and can set the record straight by taking Reading back to the top flight.

The former Swansea boss, who was sacked in December, was appointed Reading manager yesterday following Jaap Stam’s departure.

And while Clement conceded his first priority was to keep the Royals in the Championship, he also expressed his desire to manage again at the top level. “The immediate aim is to secure the club in the Championship with eight games to go,” said Clement, below. “But then beyond that there is a lot of ambition to take the club further. “They were very close last season, just penalty kicks away from the Premier League [in losing to Huddersfield in the play-offs]. That is where the club want to be and that is the ambition I have as well.” Reading sacked Stam this week after a run of nine games without a win saw them fall within three points of the drop zone. EVERTON’S Mason Holgate has been given a formal warning by the FA after a probe into allegations of homophobic social media posts.

The governing body opened an investigation in January after being made aware of three tweets the defender apparently sent from a now-deleted Twitter account in 2012 and 2013 while part of Barnsley’s youth set-up. The FA said: “The player has been given a formal warning and directed to undertake a mandatory FA inclusion programme.”
