Fury as arrests up to 90

NINETY England fans have been arrested in Amsterdam after trouble ahead of the friendly against Holland.

The Amsterdam police force posted a statement on their official Twitter account announcing the number taken into custody.

Almost 60 were detained after they were penned in by riot police in the red light district of the city.

An Amsterdam police spokesman said: “We arrested 90 English people, mainly because they were disturbing the peace.

“Some were arrested because they were throwing beer bottles in the direction of officers. From the 90 arrests, most were arrested while blocked in by the riot police after disturbing the peace.

“When we arrested that group it became quiet in the red light district although there were still hundreds of English people staying but they were not causing any problems.”

The trouble comes just hours after England manager Gareth Southgate had urged supporters to behave properly and just a year after despicable scenes marred England’s game against Germany in Dortmund.

The FA will now review those caught up in trouble in Amsterdam. ENGLAND’S women are ranked No2 in the world for the first time after finishing second in the SheBelieve­s Cup earlier this month, new manager Phil Neville’s first assignment.

That pushed Germany out of the top two in the FIFA rankings for the first time since 2009, while the United States, who beat England 1-0 in the final, retain top spot. ENGLAND started the week by planting trees and they are still not pulling any up just yet.

The tribute to players who had served in the First World War was all part of the pomp and ceremony of what had been a sticky internatio­nal get-together.

But the few seeds of hope were sown in the Amsterdam Arena last night that, given careful nurturing over the next three months, could just have time to take root and turn Gareth Southgate’s internatio­nal saplings into something more resilient.
