Hollywood ending is perfect for Zlatan

- Tony Banks Ian Whittell

JESSE LINGARD’s goal gave Gareth Southgate’s reshaped side a battling win in Amsterdam.

But it was overshadowed by disgraceful scenes as police arrested 90 England fans following trouble in the city centre.

Lingard struck in the 59th minute when he drilled home a shot from the edge of the area for his first England goal.

And it was a strike that gave England their first win against Holland since the 4-1 victory at Wembley in Euro 1996. Lingard’s Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford had a penalty claim denied when he was brought down by both Dutch goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet and defender Matthijs de Ligt in the second half.

Zoet was the busier of the two goalkeepers, making a good late save from Kieran Trippier, as England produced an encouraging performance. JOSE MOURINHO’S Zlatan Ibrahimovic gamble ended yesterday when the iconic Manchester United striker confirmed his move to LA Galaxy.

In typical Ibrahimovic fashion, the Swede took out a full-page advert in the LA Times that simply read: “Dear Los Angeles, You’re welcome, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”

The extrovert star later conducted an interview with the newspaper and said: “I want people to enjoy my game there and to win. And I chose the Galaxy to do that. I am ready to go now.

“First of all, I’m there to play football. I’m not there for something else. My first objective is to play football and do what I’m good at.

“I’m excited to come over and to get the experience with the Galaxy and to explore how the football is there. I want to be part of it and make it better.”

Mourinho chose to hand the 36-year-old a new, one-year contract in August despite a cruciate knee injury last April bringing an end to his stunning debut season, when he scored 28 goals as United won the League Cup and Europa League. However, Ibrahimovic never returned to full fitness, making the last of his seven appearances this season on Boxing Day.

Mourinho sanctioned the terminating of Ibrahimovic’s contract to enable him to fulfil his ambition to follow in the footsteps of former United star David Beckham in moving to the MLS and signing for the Galaxy.
