‘I would have booed us too’
KEVIN NOLAN backed the Notts County boo boys after his side fell to a shock 3-1 defeat at lowly Chesterfield yesterday.
County fans reacted angrily at full-time and some made abusive gestures to players who had gone to applaud them after a loss that left Notts four points from the automatic promotion places.
“If I could have been sat there I probably would have been booing with them,” said Nolan. “I’ve got no qualms about the fans – when they don’t think it’s right they’re going to voice their opinion.”
Sid Nelson gave the Spireites a 16th-minute lead and Zavon Hines drilled home in the 39th minute. Dan Jones’s free-kick on 85 minutes made it 2-1 but a Kristian Dennis penalty sealed it.
On Saturday, Luton boss Nathan Jones felt the 2-0 win over Barnet helped silence critics of his promotion-chasers.
Goals from Danny Hylton and James Collins put the Hatters back on top of the table and Jones said: “It was important because the media have really made a big thing about us not winning and getting draws, so we needed to shut a few people up.”
Wycombe had earlier failed to put pressure on the top two after being held to a goalless draw at home by relegation scrappers Port Vale, while Exeter kept up their own promotion drive after coming from behind to see off Swindon 3-1 at St James’ Park.
Mansfield boss David Flitcroft, meanwhile, was left fuming after his 10 men went down 2-0 away at strugglers Forest Green Rovers, where captain Krystian Pearce was sent off late. “That second half was unacceptable,” Flitcroft said.
Stevenage manager Dino Maamria’s first game in charge ended with a 1-0 home defeat by Colchester.
