It’s two tough for Hamilton

- Ian Gordon ROSS HEPPENSTALL

LEWIS HAMILTON is expecting double trouble in his attempt to win a fifth world championship with rivals Ferrari making their tactics clear in Australia.

The reigning champion expects rival Sebastian Vettel to be given a helping hand from teammate Kimi Raikkonen as they attempt to counter the extra speed of the Mercedes.

The strategy worked a treat in Australia as Hamilton’s team reacted to Raikkonen pitting, allowing Vettel to snatch the victory, albeit also thanks to Mercedes’ poor maths.

Hamilton said: “I was racing one against two. It is not easy to fight against a team with two cars in the mix rather than one.

“Hopefully it won’t always be the same but last year showed it was important to have both cars up there and this year it is going to be even more important.”

Hamilton would probably still have won the race had Mercedes not miscalculated the margin he had over Vettel when the virtual safety car was deployed after Romain Grosjean’s car stopped.

It meant Hamilton was denied the victory his sensational pole-winning lap just 24 hours earlier had deserved. ENGLAND coach Wayne Bennett and his players came out fighting yesterday as fears grew over the proposed mid-season Test with New Zealand in Denver.

NRL clubs are set to refuse to release players for the June 23 match, meaning it may either be cancelled or feature Super League players only.

Yet Bennett and his NRL-based stars, including the Burgess brothers and Gareth Widdop, declared their support for the match. 2.
