And Mo has to go

-

where he averaged 115 with the ball and 19.88 with the bat. His contribution in this Test was 17 wicketless overs and 28 runs.

In his place should come Lancashire’s Liam Livingstone, who showed what he could do when top-scoring with 88 during England’s opening tour game.

Two others who should go are Woakes and Craig Overton.

England’s bowling attack is one-dimensional and they have only dismissed the opposition three times in six Tests.

Woakes averaged 49.50 during the Ashes and returned figures of 0-107 in this match. He scored 52 on the final day at Eden Park but is in the team first and foremost to take wickets – something he has struggled to do this winter. Overton has had a better time here and in Australia but is not quick enough to trouble batsmen when the ball is not swinging.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who have 928 Test scalps between them, took six of the eight New Zealand wickets to fall and need support. It should come in the form of Mark Wood, who has real pace and must be given a chance to prove he has overcome his injury problems. The same could be said of spinner Jack Leach, who also deserves a go.

One complicating factor is the fitness of Stokes, who is a doubt for the final Test after his back injury flared up again. It would be a major blow for England but entirely in keeping with what has been a winter to forget.
