Giggs sees big picture

training and we’ve a lot of quality left at home as well.”

Wales thrashed China 6-0 but were second best against Uruguay as Real Madrid star Gareth Bale failed to hit his usual heights and was guilty of trying too much on his own at times. Bale said: “It’s not the result we wanted and ultimately we’re disappointed. We felt we could have got more from the game but we’ll keep learning and trying to progress.

“When the major games come around in the qualifiers, we’ll be ready.

“It’s been important having the new manager in and there are a lot of positives to take. It is a learning experience for us all. It’ll stand us in good stead for the future and I’m sure we’ll win many more games.”

Wales and Uruguay traded chances in an entertaining first half. Suarez struck the foot of the post with less than two minutes on the clock, but Wales had opportunities too through Andy King and Sam Vokes, twice each, and Bale.

But they gave the ball away too often and Suarez picked off a poor Ashley Williams back pass, rounded keeper Wayne Hennessey only to shoot against the post again.

But if Suarez doesn’t get you, Cavani will. Soon after the game resumed the outstanding Cristian Rodriguez escaped down the left and, with Williams and James Chester static, Cavani was given the simplest of finishes. Wales huffed and puffed for a way back into the game but created

little as Bale failed cylinders.

Next up is a friendly with Mexico in May. Giggs said: “We only had four training sessions here but the quality was good. That’s what I want from the players because I had that as a player. It makes a big difference. When you have that competitive nature in training, the game becomes easier.

“I knew beforehand we had a great team spirit but then witnessing it was brilliant. There is a lot of quality.

“We’ve had two very different games. We dominated one and for the second, we won’t play against much better teams than Uruguay. It was a great test which I thought they stood up to well.”
