PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Comedy: Lee And Dean, 10pm, C4

We have had high hopes for this series since the creation of it was announced last year. New sitcoms worth sticking with are few and far between but we are optimistic about the five episodes of this one. The lifelong friendship between Stevenage builders Lee and Dean is threatened by a woman. Dean’s nose is well and truly put out of joint when Nikki, the lady in question, moves into their flat and takes over organising Lee’s birthday party. But skeletons lurk in the cupboard. Lee has been enjoying “builder’s perks” with an upmarket client, and when she turns up at his party unannounced, he is terrified that she will tell Nikki what’s been going on. Miles Chapman and Mark O’Sullivan (both left) star.

Documentary: Britain’s Great Cathedrals with Tony Robinson, 8pm, Channel 5

Britain boasts some stunning cathedrals and six are visited by Tony Robinson (left) in this series. He begins with York Minster, which over the past 800 years has been a backdrop to some of the most dramatic events in our history. It houses more than half of the world’s medieval glass and its succession of bishops have defied Nazis, presided over the weddings of kings and queens, and more recently championed equality.

Film: Spooks: The Greater Good, 10.30pm, BBC1

TV show Spooks moved on to the big screen three years ago and this film features Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington (above). A terrorist escapes custody during a prisoner handover when the convoy he is being transported in is attacked, leading to a CIA operative being killed and relations becoming frayed between British and American intelligence agencies. Spy thriller, co-starring Peter Firth.

Comedy: Episodes, 10pm, BBC2

Series five of the comedy starts tonight. Several months have passed since we last saw Matt and in that time his show, The Box, has become a runaway hit. Unfortunately for him that means he must have daily contact with his producer Merc Lapidus and, if anything, the animosity between the two has only worsened. Matt LeBlanc (above) stars alongside the talented duo of Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig.

Food And Drink: Britain’s Favourite Food, 8pm, C4

In the second part of this food-based nostalgia-fest Simon Rimmer (right) explores how the UK became a nation with a love for convenience food. The chef tells the stories of Babycham as well as Cadbury’s Smash and its accompanying TV advertisement, consistently voted the favourite of the British public. Rimmer also looks at how the era of the Green Goddess ushered in Findus Lean Cuisine.
