Jam reunion off the cards

-

THEY spoke for a generation with their classic hits Going Underground, That’s Entertainment and A Town Called Malice striking a chord with the dissatisfied youth of the late 1970s.

But faithful fans of British mod band The Jam will be disappointed to hear that they will never reunite, at least according to bassist Bruce Foxton, who along with drummer Rick Buckler, 62, infamously fell out with frontman Paul Weller, 59, (left to right in the 1977 picture below) when he split the group in 1982.

“Just forget it I’m afraid. The best you can hope for is if Paul and I get together on each other’s records and I’m cool with that,” the 62-year-old tells Day & Night.

The pair, right, must have patched things up as Bruce played on the so-called Modfather’s 2010 album Wake Up The Nation and joined him on stage at the Royal Albert Hall the same year, raising hopes of a more permanent reunion.

But he’s not on such friendly terms with Rick: “I’ve not heard from him for ages but good luck to him.”

The trio formed in Woking, Surrey, in 1972 when they were just teenagers and Bruce recalls that Paul – who went on to form The Style Council before going it alone in 1989, releasing 11 solo albums to date and winning four Brit awards along the way – was always the star of the show: “Paul was so talented even at that age, especially as a lyricist and I think the words mean more now.

“When you sit back and listen to the whole picture of the song you realise what a great writer he was and still is.”
