I won’t be helping Jonny over the line this time, no

- Ian

ALISTAIR BROWNLEE may already have set his sights on his next sport when he decides to end his career as Britain’s most successful triathlete.

The double Olympic champion, who defends his Commonwealth Games title here as the action starts tomorrow, is the owner of a shotgun.

It was a present from his grateful brother Jonny for famously carrying his exhausted body over the line in Mexico. Alistair already has a trap set up at his home in Yorkshire where the brothers take their triathlon rivalry on to the shooting stage while taking tips from an expert in fellow 2012 Olympic champion Peter Wilson. Dorchester-born Wilson won double trap gold in London, retired after the event and was excluded from these Games but is considering going for gold at Tokyo 2020.

When asked who is the best marksman out of the highlycompetitive brothers when they go trap shooting, Alistair said: “Me of course.

“There wasn’t a message on the shotgun, it’s just a nice thing to have, isn’t it? We’re good friends with Peter. But ON THE GOLD COAST I’ve done my friendly bit for my brother so I won’t be helping him halfway around the course here, no.”

Alistair’s Good Samaritan act at a World Series event 19 months ago has arguably brought him as much fame and praise as winning successive Olympic gold medals in London and Rio. Jonny, who will compete against him again tomorrow, was on course for the win that would have seen him crowned champion until the fierce heat took over, with Alistair stopping to put his arms around his brother before virtually throwing him over the line. And, boy, is Jonny, 27, still paying for it. Alistair, 29, said: “He’s reminded of it every time we go to buy a cup of tea or lunch. Every time I run out of money at the cafe stop on the bike ride, it’s his turn.

“He says, ‘Surely we’re equal now?’ I reply ‘Not even close’.”

Alistair insists he is fit and ready to retain the title he won in Glasgow four years ago, having pulled out of a triathlon in Abu Dhabi last month to protect a calf problem. He
