We simply can’t bear the suspense

-

WE have a friend who is almost 80. She looks 40. Seriously. She skips around like a girl (her name’s June; appropriately she seems to live in a kind of perpetual midsummer). I suppose healthy eating and exercise play their part but her incongruous youthfulness must have its roots in her genes.

The same surely goes for Kylie Minogue and her own DNA. Kylie is barely a few weeks shy of her 50th birthday, but just look at her. She doesn’t look a day over 25. Kylie says she’s decided that marriage simply “isn’t for me”.

Hmm. I reckon Kylie’s genes will allow her ample time to change her mind on that. I can see her walking up the aisle at 60, looking 30. In fact I’d bet on it. Any takers? I LOVED last Sunday’s opening episode of Ordeal By Innocence, the BBC’s new three-part adaptation of an obscure Agatha Christie story. It’s got everything – a great cast, a deeply mystifying plot, glamorous costumes and a gorgeous country house with a fabulous scarlet carpet I absolutely covet.

But it IS very confusing, partly because most of the male members of the cast look so alike. They’re all about the same age, with identical brown haircuts. Thank God for blond Bill Nighy.

And because the plot has so many twists and turns, I immediately rushed to the BBC iPlayer so I could watch the next episode straight away. But curses! It’s not on iPlayer. We have to wait until tomorrow night to see episode two.

We’ve become a nation of bingewatching addicts, spoiled by Netflix. Delayed gratification is no longer acceptable. TV has become the new cinema, and nobody wants to keep going back to the picture-house to watch the rest of a movie. We now want to watch television series all at once, in the comfort of our own homes.

Streaming is the future. The UK TV industry ignores it at its peril.
