Plush holiday home secret of WW2 bunker

- By Joshua Haigh

IT LOOKS the sort of place where The Hobbit’s Bilbo Baggins or the Teletubbies would feel at home.

But this former Second World War bunker has been transformed into one of the country’s swankiest holiday lets.

While it may not look very distinguished from the outside, the unusual property may just be the most luxurious underground bolt-hole in Britain.

It lies in a Cornish meadow near Sennen, a 10-minute drive from Land’s End. But it is so well camouflaged by its grass-covered roof that it looks like a mound in the middle of a field.

That was probably the point when it housed military staff overseeing coastal operations.

Now the building features a large open-plan living room with wooden floors and leather sofas.

There’s even a piano to tinkle if you can’t find anything to watch on the 40-inch flat-screen TV.

Far from being dark and dingy, the house is flooded with natural light, thanks to a series of skylights built into the roof.

It sleeps six with the four cosy bedrooms, two doubles and two singles, leading off the living room.

Each room has a skylight, complete with mini-curtains for when it’s time to hit the hay after a day spent exploring the nearby sandy beaches and all that Cornwall has to offer. There’s even a patio area at the back.

Tori Kirwan-Taylor, of cottages. com, said: “It offers the opportunity to stay in a real Second World War bunker that has now been transformed into a unique holiday property.

“It comes with everything you’d expect from a modern holiday let.

“Both groups of friends looking for somewhere that’s one of a kind or families with children will feel at home with its games room and added extras such as Netflix.”
