Corbyn squirms over Maureen’s quit calls

- By David Maddox

JEREMY Corbyn was left embarrassed yesterday after he tried to avoid responding to demands from actress Maureen Lipman that he quits as Labour leader over anti-Semitism in his party.

During an interview on LBC radio, Mr Corbyn five times refused to say whether he agreed with Miss Lipman over anti-Semitism in Labour.

He kept describing her as “a great actress” instead of addressing the accusations of anti-Semitism. He finally offered to meet the Jewish actress who had taken part in a demonstration outside Labour’s offices on Sunday.

He said: “If she wishes to, no problem whatsoever, because I am determined that there will be no racism of any form, and that means no anti-Semitism whatsoever in the Labour Party.”

Miss Lipman said after the protest: “I think it is time Jeremy Corbyn leaves centre stage because he is malign. People think he is benign but he is malign. I find it amazing we have to fight anti-Semitism in 2018... we are citizens, we contribute.”

Mr Corbyn has faced criticism over his failing to deal with anti-Semitic comments and actions within Labour and his hard-Left support group Momentum. This included being slow to suspend ex-London Mayor Ken Livingstone who claimed Hitler was a Zionist. Mr Corbyn is due to meet the Jewish Leadership Council and Board of Deputies.
