Brand op after debut horror

-

WIDNES youngster Keanan Brand will undergo surgery today after suffering a double leg break just six minutes into his Super League debut.

Brand, who turned 19 in January, broke his tibia and fibula in a freak accident during the Vikings’ 31-12 defeat at Hull KR on Saturday.

Widnes coach Denis Betts said: “It’s quite a bad break. He is having an operation to have his leg plated.

“You feel for the kid, six minutes into his debut. It was just a freak accident.”

Brand’s injury has added to an early-season crisis at Widnes, who were already without Krisnan Inu, Patrick Ah Van, Lloyd White and Hep Cahill before the game and lost three more players at KCOM Craven Park.

Utility back Danny Craven (concussion), prop Wellington Albert (hamstring) and fellow front-rower Gil Dudson (ankle) will also miss tomorrow’s home game against Hull.

FORMER New Zealand international Fuifui Moimoi is back in rugby league at the age of 38 after signing for Workington.

The ex-Parramatta and Leigh forward has been playing rugby union for Bradford and Bingley since being axed by Toronto in pre-season along with Ryan Bailey and Dave Taylor for unspecified breaches of discipline.

Now he has been reunited with Bailey under Leon Pryce at the Betfred League One club.

Workington chairman Garry Mounsey said: “As well as adding more physical presence to our already impressive pack, Fuifui will pass on his tremendous knowledge and experience gained at the highest level in rugby league.”
