Walker: We had to tough it out

- By Tony Banks

KYLE WALKER admitted it had felt like he was in the middle of a relegation battle, such was the air of negativity around City last week.

The Champions League surrender to Liverpool and the defeat in the Manchester derby to a spiky United – three losses in six bizarre days – had seemed to throw Pep Guardiola’s side worryingly off course.

But at Wembley on Saturday night, against a Tottenham side in rampant form in the league, City put the doubts to bed before their title success was confirmed yesterday.

The swagger was back as goals by Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling sealed the win with Christian Eriksen replying for Spurs.

Walker said: “We’ve had the toughest period in my career at the club. We’ve gone from doing so well to three losses.

“Sometimes it felt like it was a relegation battle in there with the mood. We’re all winners and we want to win and in those games we didn’t. But we put that right. That shows the character and the belief.

“We knew this game was massive. It is a feeling of relief after what had happened.

“It was crushing to miss out in the Champions League but you have to bounce back. Liverpool beat us and congratulations to them.”

The Spurs old boy added: “It was a bit devastating not to have won the title with Tottenham.

“But we need to continue. We can’t just stop at one title. We have the potential.”

Spurs must lick their wounds in time to face Brighton tomorrow but perhaps more importantly for their FA Cup semi-final against United on Saturday.

Walker said: “Please God they win that. They deserve it.”
