Britain’s biggest drink-drive fine

- By Robert Kellaway

ANT McPartlin’s £86,000 fine for drink-driving eclipses the £54,000 imposed on footballer Yaya Toure, 34, for the same offence – reported at the time to be the biggest in the UK.

In 2016, the Manchester City midfielder was caught driving along the M6 at 101mph in a turbo-charged Porsche while under the influence of alcohol.

He was fined £54,000 and banned from the road for 18 months.

The offence has proved a regular pitfall for the rich and famous.

Over on Merseyside, Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, 26, was caught drunk behind the wheel the day after his exclusive home was burgled.

Thieves had reportedly taken £70,000 worth of jewellery, watches and clothes in the raid – and Firmino faced a further £20,000 fine for his antics the next day. He was convicted in February 2017 for driving while over the legal limit in Liverpool city centre. Wayne Rooney was reportedly docked £300,000 – equivalent to two weeks’ wages – by Everton when he was convicted of drinkdriving last year.

The former England captain, 32, escaped a fine from the court, however, when he appeared before Stockport magistrates in September. He was given community service.

Former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenter Chris Tarrant, 71, was fined £6,000 and banned from the road for 12 months after admitting drink-driving in January.

And former England rugby star Danny Cipriani, 30, faced similar costs when he crashed his Mercedes into a minicab after spending the night drinking cocktails and champagne in 2015.

He was fined £4,500 in June 2016 and banned from driving for 18 months.
