Susan finishes with Facebook
RENOWNED for her activism on women’s rights and the elimination of world poverty, Susan Sarandon is engaging in a very modern battle – protesting against social networking giant Facebook.
The 71-year-old actress has quit the hugely popular site in the wake of the recent scandal in which Cambridge Analytica obtained private information from more than 50 million of its users without their permission, and is urging others to follow suit. “I’m leaving Facebook. Delete Facebook,” wrote the clearly furious Oscar-winner on Twitter, alongside a picture of a quote by GermanAmerican writer Charles Bukowski which read: “I only feel this appalling sadness…”
She also shared the message on Instagram, ironically a platform that’s owned by Facebook. The Thelma And Louise star is the latest in the growing list of prominent celebrities and public figures abandoning Facebook in the wake of its privacy scandal, including singer Cher, actor Will Ferrell and comedian Jim Carrey who not only deleted his Facebook account but also sold his shares in the firm soon after the news broke. “I’m reaching out to let you know that in 72 hours I will be deleting my Facebook account,” he wrote in a post. Tesla cars founder Elon Musk also deleted his company’s Facebook pages, as did Playboy magazine and the software firm Mozilla.
