Summer’s here...but only until the weekend
BRITAIN will today put the holiday hotspots of Costa del Sol, Cyprus and Turkey in the shade.
The mercury could reach 80F (27C) – making it the hottest day of the year.
It means the UK will be warmer than Larnaca in Cyprus, the Greek capital of Athens, Antalya in Turkey, Malaga in Spain and Nice in the south of France.
It comes after millions enjoyed scorching sunshine with temperatures of 77F, with parts of the Southeast hotter than the Bahamas.
Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon said: “For most parts of the UK it is going to be a dry, bright day from the outset.
“Temperatures will reach highs of 79F and there is potentially the chance of reaching 80F in the Southeast.” The Met Office said the warm weather is here to stay for several days, with highs of 77F forecast in south-east England.
Families will be able to take advantage of sunshine on Saturday, with highs of 73F predicted.
Runners in the London Marathon on Sunday could be given a brief respite with rain set to reach London. But temperatures are still expected to reach 72F in the capital – a record for the race.
BBC weatherman Simon King said: “The heat will no doubt cause issues for the runners, but I can offer the smallest of relief in that there is a small chance of a thunderstorm through the morning which will temporarily drop the temperature.”
Temperatures will start to fall next week with highs on Monday of 62F.
