A five-star City show leads way

- Harry Talbot

MANCHESTER CITY players dominate the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Premier League team of the year, with five named in the select XI.

Pep Guardiola’s right-back Kyle Walker, centre-half Nicolas Otamendi and midfielders David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are all honoured, along with forward Sergio Aguero.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen and Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso complete the defence. Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is also included, along with his Spurs team-mate Harry Kane, the England striker among three forwards in the side completed by Liverpool front man Mohamed Salah, who has bagged 30 league goals so far this season.

There was, though, no recognition for any Burnley players, despite the Clarets challenging Arsenal for sixth place, which could yet see them secure European qualification.

City duo De Bruyne and Silva are shortlisted for the PFA’s Player of the Year award, along with club-mate Leroy Sane after all three helped their side win the Premier League.

Kane, Salah and De Gea are also nominated, with the winner set to be announced at the PFA’s annual awards ceremony in London on Sunday.

Wolves will be playing Premier League football next season after securing promotion, and have three players in the PFA’s Championship team of the year. Goalkeeper John IT MIGHT still not be enough to convince Jose Mourinho he is worthy of an FA Cup semi-final spot but Paul Pogba showed just why Manchester United spent £89 million on him.

The Frenchman has been much-maligned of late after falling out with his manager but his brilliant run ensured United came through a tough test at Bournemouth for victory.

Pogba’s superb driving run set up Romelu Lukaku for the 70th-minute clincher after Chris Smalling had opened the scoring in the first half.

But tellingly Pogba did not shake the hand of Mourinho after he was substituted and tried to head down the tunnel before being called back.

Mourinho responded to Sunday’s shock 1-0 loss at home to West Brom, which handed the title to Manchester
