PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Drama: The Split, 9pm, BBC1

This new drama from award-winner Abi Morgan is a clever exploration of modern marriage and the legacy of divorce seen through the eyes of the Defoes – a family of female lawyers at the heart of London’s emotionally charged divorce circuit. Leading divorce lawyer Hannah Stern has walked out on the family firm to join rival company Noble & Hale. She now faces her sister Nina and mother Ruth, also successful family lawyers, on the opposing side of high-profile divorce cases. Davey McKenzie, a Sportswear mogul, and his childhood sweetheart Goldie embark on a painful divorce and a wrangle for control of their business. Deborah Findlay, Annabel Scholey, Nicola Walker and Fiona Button (all left) star.

Comedy: Cunk On Britain, 10pm, BBC2

In an era which seems to be dominated by fake news and false information it is often difficult to clearly spot the differentiation between truth and satire. The latter is done with aplomb week after week by Diane Morgan (left) in this brilliant series. Mark Lawson joins Philomena Cunk in this episode to discuss the first half of the 20th century, an era of two world wars but no World Cup. From the razor sharp mind of Charlie Brooker, this is always entertaining. NB: 11.15PM IN EIRE AND NI

Entertainment: This Time Next Year, 8pm, ITV

Davina McCall (above, with one of tonight’s guests, Minesh) meets a young couple desperate to start a family against all odds and a brave father hoping to give his daughter the gift of life for the second time. We also find out about a single mum looking for love, an IT manager pledging to take to the stage and a lady who wants to hear her children’s voices. NB: 10.45PM IN EIRE AND NI

Drama: Flight HS13, 11pm, C4

It might mean getting to bed later than usual but this Dutch drama is well worth the sluggish start you may make to your day tomorrow. The story, which Channel 4 describes as “tense”, centres on a woman called Liv who is searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of her husband. Jeroen Spitzenberger (right) and Katja Schuurman star in the first of 10 episodes of this promising series.

Geography: Ben Nevis: The Venomous Mountain, 9pm, Channel 5

We scaled Everest last week in the series opener and tonight we are on British soil to tackle the impressive Ben Nevis. In the hour-long show, Britain’s most iconic mountain, created 350 million years ago by the collapse of a giant volcano, is examined. First climbed in 1771, it now receives more than 100,000 visitors a year, some of whom never return home alive.
